What it is used for
Ultrasound shows the uterus and ovaries and helps diagnose and monitor:
- Uterine fibroids.
- Ovarian cysts.
- Polyps and changes in the endometrium (womb lining).
- Other conditions of the uterus and ovaries.
- Causes of pelvic pain or irregular bleeding.
Transvaginal or abdominal
A transvaginal ultrasound gives the most precise image of the uterus and ovaries: it uses a slim, covered and lubricated probe and is usually well tolerated. An abdominal ultrasound is done over the skin of the abdomen and may be the right choice in some situations. We decide together which suits you best.
How to prepare
- No preparation is needed for a transvaginal ultrasound; an empty bladder is best.
- An abdominal ultrasound may require a full bladder; we will tell you when you book.
- If you have previous reports or scans, bring them so we can compare.
