What the check-up includes
- A conversation about your medical history, your cycles and any symptoms or questions.
- A full gynaecological examination.
- A cervical smear test, when one is due.
- A gynaecological ultrasound in the same visit if needed — no need to go elsewhere.
- An explanation of your results and advice for your next check-up.
How often?
An annual gynaecological check-up is recommended from the age of 18 or from the start of sexual activity. If results are normal, the smear test is usually repeated every three years; depending on your age and history, we will tell you which tests are due at each stage.
The smear test
The smear test is a quick, painless test in which a small sample of cells is taken from the cervix. It detects changes early, when treatment works very well. When the results arrive, we explain them to you and, if needed, the next steps.
When not to wait for your annual check-up
Book an appointment straight away if you notice:
- Bleeding between periods or after sex.
- Pelvic pain or pain during sex.
- Changes in discharge, itching or discomfort that does not improve.
- Any other change that worries you.
